IOG’s advocacy visit to Strasbourg

We conducted an advocacy visit to Strasbourg from April 9-10, 2024. During this visit, we briefed the relevant bodies of the Council of Europe on recent developments concerning freedom of thought, conscience, religion, and hate crimes in Türkiye.

In the meeting with the Department for the Execution of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, we discussed pertinent freedom of religion or belief judgments, with a particular focus on the cases of İzzettin Doğan and Others, and Mansur Yalçın and Others. We also provided updates on the cases to be addressed at the upcoming Committee of Ministers meeting in June 2024 and discussed the steps taken in the action plan recently submitted by the Government.

Mine Yıldırım, coordinator of the Freedom of Belief Initiative, also met with the Parliamentary Assembly’s Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination, the European Commission Against Racism and Intolerance, and the European Implementation Network.

The Freedom of Belief Initiative provides submissions under Rule 9.2, keeping the Council of Europe informed of developments related to the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion in Türkiye, as well as the implementation of relevant decisions by the European Court of Human Rights.
